DD+ Bra Sizes Have Several Names

Gigi's Closet's famous DD+ department continues to help full-chested women find bras that fit just right. However, you need to know that while American cup size ranges are A, B, C, D, DD, DDD, there are several brands that measure a bit differently. For example, Elle MacPherson bras are made for sizes A, B, C, D, DD, E. And most French brands, like Aubade and Lejaby, run A, B, C, D, E, F, G. So a DDD cup would be an F cup in their bras. DD cups would be an E cup. So, remember that if you are a DD or a DDD cup, also search for E and F cups because they will fit too. This will give you a wider range of DD+ bras to choose from. You can always check our fitting room that offers the size ranges for each brand to make sure you are purchasing the right sizes.

Noah Cyrus Not Modeling Lingerie for Ooh La La Couture

A recent Perez Hilton rumor has certainly got the internet a-buzz. According to the rumor, Noah Cyrus — Miley Cyrus' nine-year-old sister — is helping launch a lingerie line for children. And, of course, it's not true. Ooh La La Couture, a small US clothing company created by two stay-at-home moms, does make children's clothing. However, lingerie is not next on their to-do list.

The company recently launched the Emily Grace collection modeled by Emily Grace (pictured left), an eight-year-old actress from the latest Hannah Montana movie. Noah Cyrus will also be modeling the collection with her best bud; however, instead of it being lingerie, the collection includes little girls' tutus and dresses. Certainly not something worth getting the gossip chain started over. I just wanted to set the record straight before this small US company and two young girls get any more ridicule from the blogger world. And if you need any girl's clothing, please visit their lovely site. This is a prime example of how bad press may turn into a bucket of cash for these hard-working ladies.

Pear/ Triangle Shape

Not In Defense of the Slip

A recent blog on The Lingerie Post got me thinking about the history of lingerie, especially its roles in society. While “In Defense of the Slip” defends the use of the slip in today’s society, I think this fashion trend has become quite outdated. Yes, women still wear dresses, and yes, some do wear slips under them. However, I’ve been wearing dresses my whole life, and not since I was eight have I put a slip on. None of the examples used in the blog made me rethink my decision either. Jean Harlow? Elizabeth Taylor? These are beautiful women that made quite an impression in the 1930s and ‘50s, but their use of slips doesn’t exactly encourage me to run out and buy one.

For me, slips remind me too much of my mother and her lingerie-according-to-Emily-Post-type thinking. My mother always told me it was inappropriate to wear a skirt or dress without a slip. Because I never got a straight answer whenever I questioned this “rule”, the idea of being “inappropriate” prevailed. My desire to rebel and the fact that I come from a generation where few people care about being appropriate anymore — and even fewer know the name Emily Post — deterred me from wearing slips under my clothes. In fact, I see women wearing just slips in public these days, and not much more. While I could never go that far, I do enjoy feeling dresses against my skin. It makes me feel free, sexy and a bit more rebellious, especially if I’m wearing a fancy bra and thong set. Of course, my mother never understood why anyone would wear a thong either. But that’s a whole different discussion.

Design Bras for Charity!

Although Gigi’s Closet already has a Bras for Charity Drive of their own, Karma Cups: ‘An Uplifting Affair’ is another great charity event to check out this month. On Sept. 26, Bosom Buddy Recycling is helping sponsor a FUNdraiser in Mesa, Arizona, which will feature the Bra-Vogue Contest and Fashion Show. Design your own creative bra and maybe win a $200 prize. Deadline for submissions is Sept. 19, so hurry up, and start designing for charity!

Whether or not you win though, proceeds from the event go to the National Advocacy and Training Network and the Bravery Project. Both charities help support homeless, battered and sexually-abused women.

Equality Through Underwear

Wear your underpants on your head. According to Belgian artist Jan Bucquoy, that's all you need to do to be equal. "If I had portrayed Hitler in his underpants, there would not have been a war," the artist claims.

Bucquoy's "Musee du Slip" or underpants museum is now on display in Brussels. It features the underpants of famous Belgian artists, musicians and politicians, many of which are neatly placed above a photo of the celebrity's head. Each pair of panties comes with an authentication certificate, guaranteeing they were worn at least once by the celebrity that donated the pair.

Of course, these undergarments come at a hefty price — unique lingerie always does. Last weekend, a picture of Belgium's Queen Fabiola — a la undies — was sold for 550 euros. Now that's some fine lingerie.

Tips on Washing Delicate Lingerie

Lingerie can be difficult to wash. Depending on the material and the style, machine washing your lingerie can rip, tear or even shrink your lingerie. That’s why I’ve come up with some ways for you to wash your lingerie without making it a huge chore.

If you absolutely must machine wash your lingerie, due to time or the fact that you just don’t like hand-washing garments, then I suggest getting a lingerie bag (like this one from Forever New) to put your delicates in before tossing them in the machine. Wash on the gentle or delicate cycle and hang dry only!

The best way to wash your delicates, though, is by hand. This guarantees that they won’t rip or tear because they’re being handled by you, and you alone. Using a delicate soap, especially an eco-friendly one, is the best way to go. Harsher soaps or detergents, like Tide, won’t keep your garments as delicate and fresh-looking as you want them to. I suggest using a capful of eco-friendly shampoo mixed with some warm water. A little soap goes a long way, so once you’ve soaked your garments a couple of times, rinse them out, let them air dry, and they should be as good as new!

Couture Lingerie Mixes Well With Eveningwear

High fashion mixed with fine lingerie makes for a delicious, sensual runway show. On Monday in Paris, the Fall 2009 Couture runway show featured Christian Dior’s new line of formalwear mixed with lingerie (shown left and below). Models were decked out in long evening skirts matched with bra tops and corsets and intricate jackets matched with garter belts and long black stockings to match. These not-completely-dressed models depicted that of a wealthy socialite’s final moments in front of the mirror before an all-night affair. The lack of clothes make these intricate pieces all the more intriguing by adding a certain amount of sex appeal to what could have been some rather refined outfits. Has anybody tried out the new Betsey Johnson babydolls offered at Gigi’s? I just love Johnson’s sense of style. You can literally see her personality — a combination of girly and sexy — in her designs, making her one-of-a-kind pieces too wonderful to pass up. I, myself, bought the Dot Tricot Babydoll last week, and I love it! It’s extremely flattering with its self-tie belt, tying right below the chest. In fact, deciding which Johnson piece to get was a hard decision to make. It was between the Dot Tricot and two others that I still wish I could afford. The Burnout Lawn Babydoll is just as sensual and beautiful as the Dot Tricot and I love the uneven ruffles at the bottom. And I can’t stop thinking about the Chiffon Babydoll with Rosette that is completely brand new to Gigi’s — as of last week. Betsey Johnson is not afraid to use color and patterns in her designs, which is why a designer like her is a blessing to the lingerie world. In fact, we will soon have a bio about the designer in our le boudoir section, so you, too, can fall in love with the designer’s playful ways!

In case you never read the press release, Gigi’s Closet is back with new owners! We are continually adding new products to the store and updating the site to make it easier for customer shopping. I also wanted everyone to know that Gigi’s is still actively pursuing the Bras for Charity drive. Women across the country have trouble affording bras, especially ones that fit. That’s why Gigi’s Closet is asking you to send any of your gently worn or unused bras to our location in Lenexa, Kansas. The bras will go to the Salvation Army and help “support” women in the greater Kansas City area. For more information about the Bras for Charity drive (including where to send them), click here.

Coming soon, we’ll have a designer of the month that we’ll feature in the le boudoir section of the site. And because we’re so involved in our DD+ department, we want to add a section dedicated to those women that come to our site looking for larger cup sizes. We want to eventually have a style guide for each body type or maybe have an interactive section for our customers that wear bras with a DD or larger cup size. Betty Page, fellow lingerie lover, has passed.

Bettie Page, the 1950s secretary-turned-model whose controversial photographs in skimpy attire or none at all helped set the stage for the 1960s sexual revolution, died Thursday. She was 85.

Page suffered a heart attack last week in Los Angeles and never regained consciousness, her agent Mark Roesler said. Before the heart attack, Page had been hospitalized for three weeks with pneumonia.

Page, who was also known as Betty, attracted national attention with magazine photographs of her sensuous figure in bikinis and see-through lingerie that were quickly tacked up on walls in military barracks, garages and elsewhere, where they remained for years.
Her photos included a centerfold in the January 1955 issue of then-fledgling Playboy magazine, as well as controversial sadomasochistic poses. The latter helped contribute to her mysterious disappearance from the public eye, which lasted decades and included years during which she battled mental illness and became a born-again Christian.

After resurfacing in the 1990s, she occasionally granted interviews but refused to allow her picture to be taken. "I don't want to be photographed in my old age," she told an interviewer in 1998. "I feel the same way with old movie stars. ... It makes me sad. We want to remember them when they were young."

The 21st century indeed had people remembering her just as she was. She became the subject of songs, biographies, Web sites, comic books, movies and documentaries. A new generation of fans bought thousands of copies of her photos, and some feminists hailed her as a pioneer of women's liberation. Gretchen Mol portrayed her in 2005's "The Notorious Bettie Page" and Paige Richards had the role in 2004's "Bettie Page: Dark Angel." Page herself took part in the 1998 documentary "Betty Page: Pinup Queen."

Her career began one day in October 1950 when she took a respite from her job as a secretary in a New York office for a walk along the beach at Coney Island. An amateur photographer named Jerry Tibbs admired the 27-year-old's firm, curvy body and asked her to pose.

Looking back on the career that followed, she told Playboy in 1998, "I never thought it was shameful. I felt normal. It's just that it was much better than pounding a typewriter eight hours a day, which gets monotonous." Nudity didn't bother her, she said, explaining: "God approves of nudity. Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, they were naked as jaybirds."

In 1951, Page fell under the influence of a photographer and his sister who specialized in S&M. They cut her hair into the dark bangs that became her signature and posed her in spiked heels and little else. She was photographed with a whip in her hand, and in one session she was spread-eagled between two trees, her feet dangling. "I thought my arms and legs would come out of their sockets," she said later. Moralists denounced the photos as perversion, and Sen. Estes Kefauver of Tennessee, Page's home state, launched a congressional investigation.

Page quickly retreated from public view, later saying she was hounded by federal agents who waved her nude photos in her face. She also said she believed that, at age 34, her days as "the girl with the perfect figure" were nearly over. She moved to Florida in 1957 and married a much younger man, as an early marriage to her high school sweetheart had ended in divorce. Her second marriage also failed, as did a third, and she suffered a nervous breakdown.

Life grew more turbulent in later years. In 1959, she was lying on a sea wall in Key West when she saw a church with a white neon cross on top. She walked inside and became a born-again Christian. After attending Bible school, she wanted to serve as a missionary but was turned down because she had been divorced. Instead, she worked full-time for evangelist Billy Graham's ministry.

A move to Southern California in 1979 brought more troubles. She was arrested after an altercation with her landlady, and doctors who examined her determined she had acute schizophrenia. She spent 20 months in a state mental hospital in San Bernardino. A fight with another landlord resulted in her arrest, but she was found not guilty because of insanity. She was placed under state supervision for eight years.

"She had a very turbulent life," Todd Mueller, a family friend and autograph seller, told The Associated Press on Thursday. "She had a temper to her." Mueller said he first met Page after tracking her down in the 1990s and persuaded her to do an autograph signing event.
He said she was a hit and sold about 3,000 autographs, usually for $200 to $300 each. "Eleanor Roosevelt, we got $40 to $50. ... Bettie Page outsells them all," he told The AP last week.
Born April 22, 1923, in Nashville, Tenn., Page said she grew up in a family so poor "we were lucky to get an orange in our Christmas stockings."

I found this article about Carole Hochman in the March/April '08 issue of Pink Magazine. It is great to see pioneering women in the lingerie industry get credit. I thought it was interesting, so I decided to share. Article from Pink Magazine written by Kathryn Whitbourne.

In 1969, carole Hochman and 11 other fashion design students started internships at Bergdorf Goodman in New York City. "Everyone else got jobs in glamorous departments like evening gowns," Hochman recalls with a laugh, "while I got stuck in lingerie. I shed tears!"

That disappointment turned into her biggest opportunity. It started her on a course of designing lingerie under her own label and under license fir companies like Betsey Johnson, Ralph Lauren, Jockey and Oscar de la Renta. Today, as owner and creative director of Carole Hochman Design Group, she and her 180 employees ring up annual revenue of $160 million.

In the '60s, nightwear was billowy and demure. By the 1980s it had transitioned to silky and sexy. Yet Hochman was an untapped niche waiting to be filled. "I grew up wearing pajamas," she says. "I enjoyed designing the silky stuff, but that wasn't what I wore to bed. So I designed an all-cotton line. No one had done anything like that before." After Macy's placed an order for $250,000 in 1990, the new idea became a trend. "Now everyone does it," she says. Hochman attributes her company's success to being diversified. She is expanding the underwear section of her business, but she also notes that lingerie has morphed into lifestyle dressing. "Now, many women work at home and need clothes for that, or things to put on when they get home from the office," she says. "We address all these needs.

Tip of the Day: DD and DDD Cups Are Also Labeled E and F Cups

You've measured, you've calculated and tried on several bras and you now know your correct bra size. Congratulations! While most American brands cup size ranges go A, B, C, D, DD, DDD, and so on, it is SOOOO important to note that many other brands have their own size ranges.
For example, Elle MacPherson Intimates bras range as follows: A, B, C, D, DD, E. So if you are a DDD cup you would buy an E cup in this brand. Most French brands like Aubade and Lejaby run A, B, C, D, E, F, G. So a DDD cup would be an F cup in their bras. DD cups would be an E cup.
So, here's a 'Good to Know' tip: if you are a DD or a DDD cup, also search for E and F cups. This will give you a more comprehensive search for bras that we offer in your size.
